Mission
Since the days of antiquity, artists and philosophers have asked themselves, “Is it possible to create an art for our eyes that is comparable to music, the art for our ears?”
Over the years those artists who accepted this challenge developed new technologies to express their vision, frequently christening each new expression with a new name. Consequently the artistic exploration of abstraction in the moving image has taken on many forms with a wide variety of names such as “Lumia,” “Color Music,” “Mobilcolor,” “MusiColor,” “Absolute Film,” “Video Synthesis,” “Rhythmic Light,” “Abstract Animation,” and more...
iota is a public benefit, non-profit arts organization founded in 1994 on the premise that this wide range of techniques and titles share common aesthetic goals which unite them into a single art of light and movement today generally known as “Visual Music.”
iota is dedicated to preserving, promoting and uniting the dynamic world of visual music through our various programs: research, publication, preservation, exhibition and distribution. Our programs together celebrate this art form from its earliest appearance through its current expression with the latest technologies.

Music is the supreme example of movement become pattern. Music is time given sublime shape.
If for no other reason than its universality and its status in the collective
mind, music invites imitation. A visual art should give the same superior
shape to the temporal order that we expect of music.
